Ferroxyl Testing — CPD Approved (Half-Day)
Overview
A focused, hands-on course that trains you to carry out the Ferroxyl test on stainless steels to ASTM requirements (ASTM A967/A967M and ASTM A380/A380M). You’ll learn the science, perform the test yourself, and leave competent to select, apply, and interpret the method safely and correctly.
Who it’s for
Quality engineers, inspectors, fabricators, welders, finishing/cleaning teams, and NDT/QA personnel working with stainless steel components and systems.
Duration / CPD
Half-day (approx. 3.5–4 hours) • CPD approved.
Format
Short theory (~20–30%), majority practical with coached applications on representative test pieces (as-welded, ground, pickled/passivated, and intentionally contaminated).
Learning outcomes – you will be able to:
Explain what the Ferroxyl test reveals and where it fits in cleaning/passivation verification.
Reference and work to ASTM A967/A380 method requirements and acceptance criteria.
Prepare surfaces, select/prepare media, control test conditions, and apply the test correctly.
Interpret indications (false positives vs. true free-iron), make accept/reject decisions, and document results.
Work safely with reagents and manage waste in line with site procedures.
Complete compliant records: batch/lot traceability, test parameters, results, and disposition.
Syllabus (summary)
Principles: stainless corrosion mechanisms, free-iron contamination, passivation.
Standards & acceptance: ASTM A967/A380 method overview, limitations.
Practical technique: surface prep, application, timing, environmental controls, re-testing.
Interpretation & troubleshooting: common artifacts, process fixes (clean/descale/passivate).
Safety & environmental: COSHH/PPE, storage, spill/waste handling.
Documentation: test report template and integration with your QMS.
Assessment & certification
Short knowledge check + competency checklist observed by the instructor.
CPD certificate of completion issued on successful demonstration of competence.
Included
Pocket reference guide, example SOP, and editable test report template to embed in your QMS.
Prerequisites
No formal prerequisite; basic familiarity with stainless fabrication/cleaning helpful. All PPE and test media provided for courses run at RTS; on-site delivery can use client facilities by arrangement.
Delivery options
At RTS (Innovation & Training Centre) or on-site at your facility. Group and bespoke sector examples (nuclear, food/pharma, marine) available.
