Introduction to NDT & Quality Inspection — 3-Day Course

Overview
A fast-track, hands-on introduction to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and quality inspection. Over two days of structured theory followed by one full practical day, you’ll understand where each method fits, how it works, and how to select and apply the right technique safely and effectively.

Who it’s for
Technicians, inspectors, supervisors, weld/fab teams, quality and maintenance personnel, and anyone entering NDT or managing NDT contractors.

Duration & Format

  • 3 days total

    • Day 1–2: Core theory, demonstrations, real case studies

    • Day 3: Practical rotations on representative samples and defects

  • Refreshments provided each day

Methods Covered (the 5 conventional techniques)

  • VT – Visual Testing (direct/remote, lighting, surface prep)

  • PT – Dye/Penetrant Testing (surface-breaking indications, sensitivity, developers)

  • MT – Magnetic Particle Testing (ferromagnetic materials, magnetisation, indication types)

  • UT – Ultrasonic Testing (thickness, flaw detection basics, calibration blocks)

  • RT – Radiographic Testing (principles, image quality factors, safety fundamentals)

What you’ll learn

  • NDT’s role in quality assurance, compliance, and asset integrity

  • Method selection: capabilities, limitations, cost/benefit, and acceptance criteria

  • How indications are formed and interpreted (true vs. false calls)

  • Safe working practices (PPE, chemical handling, electromagnetic and radiation awareness)

  • How to document results that stand up to audit and client scrutiny

Outline Syllabus

  • Materials & defect mechanisms (welds, castings, service damage)

  • Method principles, equipment, and setup

  • Interpreting indications; common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Standards & guidance (introductory overview to ISO/ASME/ASTM practice)

  • Practical labs: set-up, test execution, basic reporting

Assessment & Takeaways

  • Knowledge checks + observed practical tasks

  • Certificate of completion and a starter pack (method quick-reference sheets + sample report template)

Prerequisites
No prior NDT experience required. Basic familiarity with fabrication/inspection helpful.
